Thank you to all the fine citizens of Bibb County who share the roads with us runners! To show my appreciation, I thought I would share a few road rules with other runners so we can all stay safe.
As funny as it looks to see someone running toward you in the left lane, would you believe that’s the right thing to do? I remember learning in Driver’s Ed back in the 80’s, that pedestrians are to use the opposite side of the road, and if you think about it, it makes sense that they should be able to see an oncoming vehicle.
What I didn’t know was there is more to that rule. If you’re drunk or otherwise intoxicated, you are not to be walking on the road at all.
If there is a sidewalk present, you are to use that instead of walking or running in the road–and if you are walking or running in the road, legally, you are to give way to any car or truck that comes along. That means get out of the road while they pass by!
A good takeaway for this subject is that when you are running or walking on public roadways, sharing with vehicles, make sure you stay aware of vehicles around you and try to time your exit from roadways so you aren’t rolling into a ditch or running through an ant bed. Stay safe, and happy running!
